5 Tips To Aid Digestion After Eating

While we all know that eating healthy, nutritious food is imperative to your overall well being, if you are not digesting it properly then you are not reaping the full benefits of your meals. Fortunately, though, there are all sorts of ways to improve your digestion after eating with a few simple steps. So if you want to start maximizing the nutrients, you receive from every meal while avoiding stomach upset and that sluggish feeling after eating, it’s time to take your digestion more seriously. Here are five tips to aid digestion after eating!

Reduce Your Liquid Consumption During A Meal

Drinking too much water, pop, juice or any other fluid with your meals, can impair digestion. When you consume more than 4 ounces of liquids with your meals, you risk diluting your naturally occurring digestive juices, thereby obstructing your digestion. Try to consume no more than 4 ounces of fluids with meals and instead, drink your water in between meals. It is also advisable to limit your fluid intake half an hour before a meal and half an hour after to allow your body to do its job properly.

Take A Digestive Enzyme

Taking a digestive enzyme with your meals can help your body to absorb more nutrients. The way they work is by breaking down the food you eat into smaller particles for easier absorption into the body. Digestive enzymes help with protein digestion, breaking down fat and absorbing nutrients at a higher rate. An efficient digestive enzyme will likely contain bromelain, papain, amylase, and hydrochloric acid, among others. You can also find bromelain in pineapple and papain in papaya, but you shouldn’t consume fruit right after a meal as it can cause gas, bloating and a sore stomach. Fruit digests faster than other foods, so if you eat it after a meal, it just sits on top of the other stuff impatiently and begins fermenting, which leads to discomfort. That’s why you are better off getting the digestive enzymes from a supplement.

Wait 2 Hours Before Going To Sleep After A Meal

One of the worst things you can do for yourself following a meal is to lay down. Laying down hinders the digestion process as our bodies aren’t designed to digest food in a horizontal position. Laying down after a meal is what leads to slower digestion as well as indigestion and heartburn as the digestive juices have a chance of creeping back up your esophagus. Ideally, one should wait at least two hours before going to bed after a meal.

Stay Away From Caffeine and Cold Liquids Around Meal Time

Drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea, or pop around meal time can hinder digestion as the caffeine acts as an appetite suppressant. This process of suppressing your appetite can prevent absorption of some of the nutrients found in your food. While cold liquids hinder digestion as they affect the stomach’s ability to produce the acid needed to break down food by numbing it.

Avoid Showering After A Meal

It is important not to shower after a meal as the hot water pulls your blood toward the surface and away from your digestive tract. However, to digest your food properly, you need that blood flow to move toward your organs and in particular, your gastrointestinal tract. It is ideal to wait at least thirty minutes before taking a shower after you eat so as not to interrupt your digestion.
